Digital Darwinism

So the point of this blog is not to flood the internet with yet another entertainment news site, but rather to document my thoughts and opinions on the current state of the film business in the hopes that a road map will appear to discern where Hollywood is headed.  They say that those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it, so my hope is that by reviewing where we’ve come from, somehow I will be able to see the future of where this industry is headed.

The internet is flooded with entertainment news.  Why read one more site?  Well, rather than trying to be the first one to break a story, I’d rather look at the facts, interpret them through an Independent Producer’s subjective lens, and release them back into the wild of the internet instead of reporting the same facts you can find anywhere that just happen to be decorated with each author’s slightly subjective cherry on top.

This idea has been through a rather lengthy gestation period, and I think it’s important to note than on the day of the premium VOD launch, I could stay silent no longer.  I am determined to find a way through the chaos and panic that is plaguing this fair city right now, because although no town is more resistant to change than Hollywood, I also think no one does a facelift better than this town.  If we look back over the last century in entertainment, all change was met with the same panic as we face today, but in almost every instance, the change was for the better.

Silent films led to “talkies,” black and white films led to glorious Technicolor, film led to television, and so on.  At each turning point, there were those visionaries that chose to embrace change rather than fight it, and I liken those people to the first pioneers who headed west during the Gold Rush.  Because that is truly what the internet age is- the 21st century Gold Rush.  Modern day ‘49ers are canvassing the internet, VOD, cell phones, and any other platform they can find in a race to plant their flag and claim their share of the riches.  But like the Gold Rush, many will perish, and few will prosper.  It’s a digital Darwinism- Survival of the Fittest and Savviest.

I make no claim that I have the answer, but my hope is to be among those Pioneers ready to plant my flag, and find the new way in to audiences.  I plan on bringing the “IN” back to Independent Producers.  If you don’t go after what you want, then someone else will.  Start your wagons.
